Hello LJ, long time no see. I think I got lost there somewhere in a haze of not sleeping properly and trying to sort out visas...

Have a book meme (which I stole from [ profile] badfalcon:

Choose 10 books that you like. List the first sentence or so of each of those books. Let other people try to figure out what book that first line is from.

  1. It was dawn on the northern frontier of France; a border marked only by a shallow stream which ran between the stunted trunks of pollarded willows. A paved high road forded the stream. The road led north from France into the dutch province of Belgium, but there was neither guardpost or gate to show where the road left the French Empire to enter the kingdom of the Netherlands.

  2. Either this will ring bells for you, or it won't. A printed banner has appeared on the concourse of a petrol station near to where I live. "Come inside," it says, "for CD's, VIDEO's, DVD's, and BOOK's."

  3. The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - a compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.

  4. "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the old rug. ~ Little Women, Louisa May Alcott - [ profile] badfalcon

  5. Like most people I lived for a long time with my mother and father. My father liked to watch the wrestling, my mother liked to wrestle; it didn't matter what. She was in the white corner and that was that.

  6. The Santa Anas blew in hot from the desert, shriveling the last of the spring grass into whiskers of pale straw. Only the oleanders thrived, their delicate, poisonous blooms, their dagger green leaves. We could not sleep in the hot dry nights, my mother and I. ~ White Oleander, Jeanette Fitch - [ profile] fleurlb

  7. In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees.

  8. Dear Ms Bloomwood,

Congratulations! As a recent graduate of Bristol University you are undoubtedly proud of your performance.
~ Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, Sophie Kinsella - [ profile] badfalcon

  9. Fifteen of us climbed aboard the ancient white school bus. Wire mesh covered its windows and four black words ran along its sides: UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS.

  10. The morning star was just fading in the violet sky as the huge wooden cart, crowded with naked slaves, moved slowly over the castle draw-bridge. The white draft horses plodded steadily towards the winding road, and the soldiers drove their mounts close to the high wooden wheels, the better to catch with their thudding straps the naked legs and buttocks of the wailing slave Princes and Princesses.

Yes, and Yes... I think I'm going to give it, it's Secret Dreamworld.

2 is an awkward one, you probably have read it because you write. ♥

6 is "White Oleander". I think. I haven't read it since it came out but it was a really good book.

That's OK, these were just the books scattered closest to me, and I've done a lot of reading for class recently, so some of them are obscure. ♥
